Like any piece of writing, an article is always a compromise. It condenses hours of reading and thinking and writing into a straightforward narrative with a tidy beginning and end. And like most stories worth telling, there are always alternative accounts and extra details warming up in the wings. Every story, no matter how short, has its otherwise and other than.

I was, therefore, happy to have been asked by the fine editors at NiCHE, the Network in Canadian History & Environment, to write an introduction to my recently published article “Cod and its Oil, Cuisine and its Supplements: Fish Fragmentation, Commodity Connections and Naturalising Resources in Newfoundland.” In “Far Away from Far Away” I detail detours and the potential of thinking about the places you need to pass through in order to arrive elsewhere.
